Many of the international clinics that IFC works with, including the Ventus IVF Center, offer the Tandem IVF method but what does this actually involve and who would benefit from it? This article takes a brief look at Tandem IVF.

As women get older their fertility decreases. There are two reasons for this,

  • Low ovarian reserve
  • Poor egg quality

The Tandem IVF method offers the possibility of allowing women to use both their own eggs and a back-up, in the form of donor eggs. It is a method which has become increasingly popular with older women patients who want to attempt a cycle with their own eggs but also want the reassurance of having a donor. It is also a treatment of choice for women with low egg quality.

What does Tandem IVF involve?

This treatment involves two cycles. A doctor will retrieve eggs from the patient and from a donor. For the patient this usually means that they will receive a lower dose of medication as a lower number of good quality eggs will be sought.

When the eggs have been retrieved the patient is able to choose, in consultation with their medical advisor, how they will be employed. The patient can choose a combination of her own eggs and the donors or alternatively undergo a cycle with her own eggs and freeze the donors to use at a later date if the first cycle fails. The latter option provides a safety net should a cycle using the patient’s own eggs be unsuccessful.

Who chooses a Tandem IVF treatment?

Assisted reproduction treatment can be expensive and be emotionally challenging for patients. For older patients and those with low egg quality treatment, it may be a final step in a long journey. The step may be their last opportunity to realise their dream of becoming a parent. It is essential therefore that they are given every opportunity for a successful cycle.

Many women understandably want to use their own eggs wherever possible. Rather than going down the donor route straightaway Tandem IVF provides an opportunity for them to do just that, but also provides a back-up if this does not happen. For many patients, Tandem IVF represents the ideal compromise – allowing them a final opportunity with their own eggs and only then, using donor eggs.

Tandem IVF is a good choice for women with diminished ovarian reserves – when her chances of a pregnancy using her own eggs is limited (but not impossible) the introduction of donor eggs increases the probability of success.

Can everyone have a Tandem IVF treatment?

In a world where consumerism is king the short answer is yes but be wary. In some cases it is just not possible to achieve a pregnancy using your own eggs and a responsible clinic will advise you of this from the very outset.

If you wish to use your own eggs an ethical treatment provider will ask you to undergo a number of tests and screens to obtain a baseline view of your chances of success. They will then be able to advise whether using your own eggs is a viable option. If this option is possible, but not probable, a Tandem IVF treatment may be offered if the patient is adamant that they want to give it a go using their own eggs.

More information on Tandem IVF

Modern day assisted reproduction treatment is all about choice. Technology exists to allow women to potentially delay conception though egg freezing and the emergence of AI is helping labs choose the most viable embryos to transfer.

This choice extends to which treatment women want to undertake. If that choice involves the use of her own eggs in combination with those of a donor, it is up to her to make that decision. The clinics role is to ensure she is fully aware of the chances of success with any treatment and she is able to make a fully informed decision with her medical advisor.
